As many (hopefully all) of you know, this past Thursday was the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision forcing abortion on America and sentencing millions of children to death each year. Our Catholic faith clearly teaches us that this heinous practice is gravely immoral. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us in paragraph 2272, “Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. "A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae," "by the very commission of the offense," and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law. The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society.” Yet despite the gravity of abortion, many Catholics are still pro-choice. The question I would ask is why? Why do so many people claim to be Catholic, yet support something that GOD says is wrong. It is not something I have an easy answer for, nor do I believe and easy solution exists. The root of the problem lies in exactly the same place that some say the root of all sin ultimately resides, pride. That desire to do whatever I want and no one can tell me otherwise. It is a common misconception of freedom that in the end is just a dressed up form of anarchy. It is kind of like a little kid who throws a tantrum when his mom won’t let him play with scissors. The mom knows the scissors are sharp, so when she sees her little son (whom she loves) playing with them, she takes them away so he won’t hurt himself. The son, who was having fun playing with the scissors, feels that he has a right to those scissors and his mother is infringing on his freedom by taking them away. The same principle applies to the pro-abortion movement. They refuse to acknowledge that no one has a choice to kill another person (we call that murder) just because they want to. If pro-abortion people were really all about protecting peoples rights, they would have to start with the rights of the child. Pride, however, gets in their way. For Christians it is a refusal to recognize to put the will of God ahead of our own. In all reality it really isn’t all that much different from what happened in the Garden of Eden. We listened to a pack of lies from the devil about what would make us happy, then turned on God and went against his will. Look how well that ended.
